Suicide and mental illness are prominent themes in today’s world. With the downturn of the economy in the past year or two, the rate of suicide in Alberta has increased by 30%.
To combat the problem, I Will Survive Association Ltd. was created to remove the stigma surrounding mental illness, offer support to those struggling with mental health issues, and let society know that there is always someone around to help.
I Will Survive Ltd. was formed as a result of the tragic suicide of a close friend of the board of directors. The tragedy brought to light the seriousness of mental illness and the lack of resources available to those who suffer.
The life lost was of someone with a passion for music, and to pay homage to a dear friend, the organization hosts a number of fundraising events that feature local artists in an effort to increase awareness about suicide and mental illness.
I Will Survive Ltd. has created the Music 4 Life Concert Series that consists of countless events featuring live music from local artists. In addition to fundraisers, I Will Survive Ltd. continues their efforts through monthly podcasts highlighting stories and anecdotes from those who have either suffered from mental illness or know somebody who has including individuals from similar organizations, musical artists, and those who just want to have their story heard.
As an ongoing effort to help the community, I Will Survive Ltd. Is currently running the Music 4 Life Instrument Drive through which individuals can donate used musical instruments to youth all over the community, most of whom do not have the finances necessary purchase or even rent an instrument for themselves.
Every year, I Will Survive participates in the Canadian Mental Health Association’s Ride Don’t Hide event. The 2016 ride took place in June, with the next one already planned for June 25, 2017. Participation is open to all ages and skill levels.
