Today I’d like to give our Wellness section some love, as well as mention a few resources we’ve both enjoyed following over the past five+ years or so.
For about the same amount of time, we’ve researched, experimented and practiced various food and lifestyle self-led 'programs' such as a 6-week plan for getting off chips (or... insert your junk food of choice); vegetarianism; the dairy-free diet; raw food; fasting; yoga and weights.
Recent research reveals that only 15% of adults meet the Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines (Conference Board of Canada, 2015), with the activity level of children and youth even lower – only 9% meet the recommendations for daily activity targets (ParticipACTION 2015).
These statistics have serious implications for individual and community health and well-being, as sedentary lifestyles and behaviours post significant risks.
Calgary Recreation plans to change those stats.
In 2015 an initiative began to help reduce sedentary behaviour and lifestyles with #GetMovingYYC, an awareness-raising campaign and series of community based activities to get more Calgarians, more active, more often.
Working with the community, #GetMovingYYC invites Calgarians to ‘join the movement’ by committing to move more every day.
Moving more doesn’t have to be a big commitment. Making small changes to your everyday routine can have a huge impact on your health. Make ‘moving more’ a personal goal, a family activity or a community challenge. Where ever you are, whatever you’re doing, there are so many ways to move in Calgary.
Join the movement and the conversation
What was your favourite recess activity as a kid? How do you and your family move for health? Use #getmovingyyc on Twitter to talk about how you 'moved more' today, or visit the Get Moving YYC Facebook page to find out about free events throughout Calgary or get ideas on how you and your family can get moving!

Suicide and mental illness are prominent themes in today’s world. With the downturn of the economy in the past year or two, the rate of suicide in Alberta has increased by 30%.
To combat the problem, I Will Survive Association Ltd. was created to remove the stigma surrounding mental illness, offer support to those struggling with mental health issues, and let society know that there is always someone around to help.
