The place where we feel the safest – at home – unfortunately is where most fires occur.
Smoking materials are the leading cause of fire deaths. Although entirely preventable, every year there are over 500 fires started due to smoking materials.
Some tips to remember: - If you smoke, smoke outside. Most deaths result from fires that started in living rooms, family rooms and bedrooms. - Keep cigarettes, lighters, matches and other smoking materials high out of reach of children. Children are known to be very observant regarding “hidden” lighters. - Put it out, right out! Before throwing away any cigarette butts and ashes, douse them in sand or water. - Use a deep sturdy ashtray. Place it away from anything that can burn. - Do not discard cigarettes in vegetation such as mulch, potted plants, peat moss, grass, leaves or other things that could ignite easily.
The Calgary Fire Department receives calls regarding fires that could have been prevented. If the above safety guidelines are followed, our families, homes and neighbourhoods can remain the safe place we depend on.
